The New York Yankees announced Thursday that they selected the right pitcher Nick Tropeano’s contract from their alternate training site. He will go to a 40-man roster and then to the major league bullpen.
Right-hander Tommy Kahnle, who underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this week, was transferred to the 45-day disabled list to clear a 40-man spot for Tropeano.
It’s kind of a homecoming for Tropeano, a Long Island native who grew up as a Yankees fan. The 29-year-old (30 later this month) has pitched in parts of five major league seasons, working for a combined ERA of 4.51 with 8.0 K / 9, 3.6 BB / 9 and 1.57 HR / 9.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
• Signed RHP Nick Tropeano (#35) to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster.
• Transferred RHP Tommy Kahnle to the 60-day injured list.— New York Yankees (@Yankees)

Tropeano was at one time a fairly well-regarded prospect in the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels organizations, but his career has been derailed by persistent arm injuries.
The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery with the Angels in 2016 and has since struggled with shoulder and elbow issues that have limited him to a total of 182 innings (between the minor leagues and GLs) in the 2018- seasons. 19.
Tropeano was hit hard in the Pacific Coast Triple-A League last year, posting a 5.87 ERA in 79 2/3 innings.
That’s a notoriously favorable scenario for first-time hitters, however, and the same changes in ball composition that led to a record-high level of home runs in the big leagues also affected Triple-A. Before the 2019 season, Tropeano had a 3.67 ERA in 223 Triple-A chapters.
