Mississippi will remove the Confederate flag from its flag

The local Parliament of Mississippi (United States) has approved a law to remove the Confederate flag, that is, the symbol of separatists during the civil war, from the flag of your state. The law has been approved by both the House and the state Senate, and will now have to be signed by Governor Tate Reeves (Republican), who has previously said he will give his approval. Mississippi is the only state in the United States to have kept the Confederate flag within its flag, which has existed since 1894, and its removal has been talked about for some time, because it is considered a racist symbol.

The Confederate flag was in fact the symbol of the southern states that during the civil war of the United States, fought between 1861 and 1865, fought among other things for the maintenance of black slavery. Those who continue to use it still today often do so with an implicit racist meaning and proud apology of the “old days”, which are exchanged by the most benevolent commentators for identity and nationalist defense.

The recent demonstrations for “Black Lives Matter” have reopened the debate around the removal of the Confederate flag, and even Governor Reeves, who until recently claimed that the decision was up to the voters, has changed his mind. “Discussions about a 1894 flag have become as divisive as the flag itself, and it’s time to close them,” said Reeves explaining his decision to sign the law.

From the moment of signing the Confederate flag will have to be removed from that of the state within fifteen days, and subsequently a commission will be established which will have until September to propose a new flag for the state, which will be put to the vote in November.
