A former colleague visited the institution in Banda Aceh after being shown a picture of a patient resembling Asep, the missing policeman.
The police informed Asep’s family, who visited him and confirmed that he was due to a scar on his face.
Asep disappeared after his police post was taken by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. It is not clear how he ended up in the institution. His family assumed he was dead, and prayers were said for him in the mosque.
More than 200,000 people lost their lives in the 2004 tsunami, including at least 130,000 in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
