35,000 Freiburg fans in the stadium and countless fans on the streets of Berlin mourn after the game. The players and their coach Christian Streich lost out on penalties. Despite this, SC Freiburg put in a very good performance.

It was a mega-exciting evening in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. A strong performance was not enough for the sports club to win the title. In the penalty shoot-out, coach Christian Streich’s team lost to RB Leipzig. We take a look at the performance of the tragic team from Breisgau.

The players of SC Freiburg in the individual review

Mark Stains: The Dutchman caused danger once in the early stages when he flipped a ball forward. However, he didn’t let that deter him. With his own possession of the ball, he shows once again that he is one of the best keepers in terms of football, and he then safely saved the other Leipzig shots on goal. He slightly misjudged the high ball that sailed towards the left post before Nkunku equalized and, like the Freiburg back line, didn’t look good. But after 83 minutes he saved the SC from going behind. In extra time, the Dutchman didn’t always look confident. In the penalty shoot-out, he was in two of four shots in the right corner, but could not save any. Note: 3,5

Manuel Gulde: The fact that you are usually not that conspicuous next to Nico Schlotterbeck does not have to be a bad thing for a defender. Seriously he did his job in defense. The top-class Leipzig offensive department was unregistered from Gulde and Co. for a long time. As the game progressed, however, he seemed insecure, before a big chance after 85 minutes he lost his running duel on the left flank. In the overtime he seemed a little stronger again, 14 minutes before the end he made room for Keven Schlotterbeck. Note: 3,5

Philip Lienhart: Formed a strong defensive bar together with Gulde and Schlotterbeck. Was always alert and available in important duels. When equalizing in the 74th minute, he lost the header duel in the penalty area against Orban, who brought the ball high on the left post. Note: 3,5

Nico Schlotterbeck: In his last game in Freiburg, it was he who made the SC fans cheer for the first time with a clean tackle. Cleared a ball on the line in the 24th minute and thus prevented Leipzig from equalizing quickly. As a result, “Schlotti” did what he had been doing throughout the season. He organized the defence, brought in emotions and was safe with high balls. Schlotterbeck was also extremely present in the hot phase, with increasing duration the outstanding 22-year-old also intervened at the front and then still had time to drive the fans on. Note: 1

Luke Kuebler: Because a lot went to the left, Kübler was rather inconspicuous offensively in the first round. Defensively, however, he was always up to par and thus also played a part in Leipzig getting few good opportunities. Jonathan Schmid came on for him shortly before the end of regular time. Note: 3,5

Maximilian Eggestein: Eliminated with Bremen against Osnabrück in the first round of the DFB Cup – and put SC Freiburg ahead after 19 minutes in the final with a well-placed left-footed shot into the left corner. After that he did a serious job – but without appearing again as he did in the 19th minute – after 86 minutes he was substituted for Janik Haberer. He has secured his place in the Freiburg history books as the first final goal scorer. Note: 2,5

Nicholas Hofler: Reliable as always in midfield. Made a risky back pass to Flekken in the 24th minute. Thanks to Schlotterbeck, however, this had no consequences. Otherwise, the 32-year-old played all his experience. Even at the end of regular time, Höfler kept his nerve and kept the ball calm. In the 119th minute, however, he was quite lucky that referee Stegemann awarded Dani Olmo a corner instead of a penalty when he tackled Dani Olmo. Note: 3,5

Christian Gunter: The captain led the team onto the field in the Game of Games and looked like he’d never done anything but play a final. The cross came from Tennenbronner before the 1:0. The presence of the 29-year-old also helped a neighbor. Since a lot went over the left, Günter almost initiated offensive action directly or indirectly. Freiburg came in second in the penalty shoot-out and shot over it. However, he still has to wait for the chance to be presented with the trophy as captain. Note: 2,5

Roland Sallai: Appeared in the early stages, especially with dangerous penultimate passes. Was probably on the ball with his hand before the 1-0, but this touch was not punishable. The Hungarian was also often involved in the second half when things got dangerous – but in the 60th minute he only hit the side netting from a tight angle. After 79 minutes it was over for the active Sallai, Ermedin Demirovic replaced the 24-year-old. Note: 2

Vincenzo Grifo: Had little opportunity to show his magic foot in set pieces in the first half. However, he was always present next to Höfler in the switching game and with an overview. In the 65th minute, his long-range shot went half a meter over the goal. As always, Grifo didn’t make any mistakes, but he didn’t make the big spectacle. However, the 29-year-old set his flick in the 117th minute way too high. Note: 3

Lucas Holer: Started as expected in the front of the attack, but also switched to the wing from time to time. When Höler ran alone towards the RB goal in the 57th, Marcel Halstenberg grabbed and deservedly saw the red card due to an emergency brake. His teammates also looked for him with long balls, but couldn’t find him. Nils Petersen came on for the 27-year-old in the 79th minute. Note: 4,5

Ermedin Demirovic: Came into play after almost 80 minutes and had a chance to head the ball before extra time. In the end, however, his attempt was too safe. At the beginning of extra time, his arc lamp header hit the outside of the post. After 104 minutes he had the 2:1 on his foot, but the rebound from Haberer’s post shot was difficult to deal with. His cracking of the bar as the fourth penalty shooter was the final act in an extremely exciting cup final. Note: 3

Nils Petersen: The best joker in Bundesliga history came into play in the 79th minute. The veteran first attracted attention in the initial phase of overtime, but a shot from 13 meters was blocked. Otherwise, Petersen always tried, but didn’t get a real chance – all in all an inconspicuous appearance by the joker. Remained cool with the sports club’s important first penalty and missed Gulacsi. Note: 4

Janik Haberer: In his farewell game for SC, RB keeper Gulacsi deflected his shot to the post with a strong save in the 104th minute. It was Haberer’s first dangerous action after being substituted on. Six minutes before the end, he made a direct shot from 18 meters to the top of the bar. The Bald-Unioner made a good game, but twice the aluminum prevented his farewell goal. Note: 2,5

Jonathan Schmid: Was not often in focus on the right, but Günter repeatedly staged it with a long change of sides. When the Alsatian was on the ball, it was usually dangerous – he was also involved in the huge chance after 104 minutes. Note: 3

Keven Schlotterbeck: Came in for Manuel Gulde in the second half of extra time and took responsibility in the penalty shoot-out as the third taker. However, he wasn’t on the field long enough to get a grade.
