taylor Twins‘ Fierce Rivalry Fuels Success on the Cricket pitch
Southampton, England – The Taylor twins, Mary and Millie, are making waves in the world of women’s cricket, showcasing both individual brilliance and a sibling rivalry that dates back to childhood games in their Eastbourne back garden. This season has been a whirlwind of reunions, challenges, and successes for the mirror twins, culminating in Hampshire’s upcoming appearance in the first ever Metro Bank Women’s One Day Cup final on September 21st.
After spending a winter apart, the pair found themselves reunited in The Hundred, though initially only Millie secured a spot in the Phoenix starting XI, leaving mary on the bench. “I was absolutely ecstatic when I saw my name,” Millie said, “But I had to stay quite level, because I was happy, but obviously, I was upset that I wouldn’t be getting to play with mary.” Mary responded with playful confidence, stating, “When the team came through, I was a little bit like, ‘I told you so’.I said, ‘right, don’t worry about me, I’m going to be fine, you need to go and bowl everyone out, off you go’.”
The twins’ competitive spirit is a constant throughout their careers. Mary eventually earned her place in the starting XI, but unluckily, Millie sustained a broken finger shortly after, prematurely ending her first season as a professional cricketer. Despite the setback, Millie finished as the leading wicket-taker in the Women’s Vitality Blast.
their parents have been steadfast supporters, travelling hundreds of miles to attend as many of their daughters’ matches as possible. The pressure of facing each other on the field is palpable, even for their mother. “Mum hid behind a tree when we were playing each other,” Mary revealed. “She always gets so nervous – especially when Millie had to bowl at me at Edgbaston.”
During a particularly tense moment at Edgbaston, Mary recalled her focus: “She’s only got two more balls in her spell, I’ve just got to not get out!” Mary survived the over, but Warwickshire ultimately won the match and advanced to Blast Finals Day. Despite Millie’s individual success, Mary remains confident in maintaining bragging rights, with Hampshire poised for the One Day Cup final.
The enduring rivalry, born in their childhood backyard, continues to be a powerful motivator for both Mary and Millie Taylor as they forge their paths in professional cricket.
