Miriam has been without gas since February

Miriam Trelles turns on her electric grill to make an omelet, but it’s been 10 minutes and it’s still not hot enough.

“Look, this still does not heat, look at this still does not heat and see that there are only two eggs,” Miriam explained.

The tenant has been like this since February, when both her and the other tenants of the buildings at 373, 375 and 377 42nd Street had their gas cut off for alleged temporary repairs.

But eight months later they still have no solutions.

In addition, electricity consumption has risen 50% because of that grill that the landlord offered them as a temporary solution.

“This is damaged at the moment because this is not for daily cooking,” Miriam added.

And the problems do not end here.

Miriam shows us that she has sent her rent checks on time each month, including October, but now, like the other neighbors, she has received a notice that she owes two months of rent.

Miriam has lived in this income stabilized apartment for more than 40 years.

Miriam. Tenant.

She lives alone and likes to read a little in the afternoon when she comes to rest.

With the arrival of winter, you fear an electrical surge in a building that is more than a century old.

“There are certain apartments that have an electric stove, so at night, in the afternoon, the light diminishes, I imagine it is due to the force of the kitchens,” said Miriam.

Miriam’s neighbors discovered that the landlord wants to sell the building. They have filed a lawsuit for the lack of gas and in early November they will have their first hearing.

“There are almost three hundred other violations that they have given him, not only for lack of gas for cooking but things like lead, cockroaches and mice, liquefaction problems, lack of enough electricity in one of the outlets,” explained Marcela Mitaynes, organizer, of Neighbors helping Neighbors.

This Tuesday city inspectors visited the building. For his part, the landlord has not responded to our calls.
