The US state of Minnesota has called in more than 1,000 National Guardsmen as reinforcements because of the ongoing and sometimes violent protests after George Floyd’s death.

They would support the 700 soldiers already deployed because of the protests, the Minnesota National Guard said on Twitter on Saturday. It said it was the unit’s greatest effort in its 164-year history.
Governor Tim Walz had previously admitted on Saturday night that the already massively strengthened security forces in the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul were still overwhelmed by the violent protests.
The trigger for the protests was the death of African American George Floyd following a brutal police operation in Minneapolis. There were also violent protests in other US cities, including New York, Detroit, Washington, Louisville, Portland and Oakland, on Saturday night. (dpa)
