Ministry of Health Urges Mass Rabies Vaccination for Dogs Amid Outbreaks in Indonesia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Health considers that there is a need for a mass movement to give rabies vaccinations, especially to dogs that have the potential to experience rabies.

“Because there is already an outbreak area (KLB), a simultaneous mass movement must be carried out led by the local government involving all relevant agencies to conduct a sweep of animals, especially dogs, which have the potential to become rabies. The dog is then given vaccination,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Mohammad Syahril in a press conference which was followed online in Jakarta, Friday.

Two districts have declared rabies outbreaks, namely Sikka District and South Central Timor (TTS) District, East Nusa Tenggara Province.

He added that mass movements need to involve the community of animal lovers, especially dog lovers, both at the national and regional levels.

“The most important thing right now is the handling of rabies-carrying animals, such as dogs, cats and monkeys so that rabies vaccination in the dog and cat population is at least 70 percent achieved, where currently it is only 40 percent. carriers of rabies are roaming,” he said.

Related to the status of the outbreak, he continued, in epidemiology it is one level below the outbreak, which means that the rabies outbreak can still be handled at the local level by the government together with the local community.

With an outbreak status, there are several actions that must be taken to localize it, both from the animal and human side.

On the same occasion, the Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health, Imran Pambudi, said that one of the keys to successful vaccination is group immunity and all dogs must be vaccinated.

“So it’s not just the dogs at home, it’s the stray dogs that must be vaccinated, including puppies,” he said.

He added that no less important is the management of the dog population.

“So we have to do population control, we can’t let dogs roam outside especially if there are no owners,” he said.
