Ministry of Defense prohibits employees from using the video bubble app Zoom | NOW

The Ministry of Defense bans employees from using the Zoom video calling app on business devices such as computers and phones, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday after reports by The Financial Times.

According to the Security Authority (BA), which is responsible for policy and oversight in this area within Defense, the app contains “many security vulnerabilities” that jeopardize user privacy and could compromise “Defense information security”.

It is unclear exactly what risks the BA relies on. The ministry spokesman was unable to answer that question. However, there have been several security issues around Zoom in recent weeks to the light after the app gained popularity in a short time.

Besides Zoom, there are currently no similar video calling apps on the blacklist, the spokesperson said.

Defense instructs employees to use the business version of Skype on its internal network for communication between defense personnel. Teams has been approved for communication with colleagues who cannot access that network. Both services are owned by Microsoft.

A spokesperson on behalf of Zoom informs NU.nl that he is currently awaiting a response from the United States, where Zoom’s head office is located.
