Minister to introduce alcohol collar to nationwide to combat alcohol abuse NOW

The alcohol collar has been introduced nationally after several test phases, Minister of Justice and Security Ferd Grapperhaus reports on Monday. The band is intended for people who have been banned from alcohol during a conviction.

Now people with an alcohol ban must report to the probation service twice a week for a breathalyzer, blood or urine test. This is always a snapshot, so that the alcohol prohibition can be violated between inspections.

The so-called Alcohol Meter measures alcohol consumption via sweat 24 hours a day. These results are then forwarded to the probation service.

The trial with the tire started in 2017 and, according to Minister Grapperhaus, it turned out that it is a reliable means of control. “Many violent crimes are committed under the influence of alcohol, such as violence when going out, football or at home. The Alcoholmeter is an effective way to change behavior. That is why I want the ankle bracelet to be used nationwide.”

A test has shown that tape has a positive effect on wearers

Participation in the experiments with the alcohol kelband has been voluntary in recent years. The results show that the carriers are generally positive about the tire. About three quarters say that the Alcoholmeter has created awareness. In addition, the research shows that on more than 90 percent of all days that a band was worn, no alcohol was measured in blood.

Wearing a band also has a positive influence on offense behavior. 10 percent of the carriers appeared in police records, in the control group that only underwent urine control, this percentage was five times higher.

The alcohol meter is still laid down in law. The band will then be able to be sentenced.
