The current trends in the prevalence of Covid-19 in Latvia do not yet provide a basis Riga City Council the cancellation of the extraordinary elections and the postponement of the beginning of the new school year, the Minister of Health said on Friday after the government meeting Ilze Ņķele (AP).

The Minister explained that the current situation with the new cases of Covid-19 is not devastating, but “we have reason to act quickly to limit the spread of Covid-19”.
Vinkele reminded that Latvia’s cumulative morbidity rates are still one of the lowest in Europe, however, the situation with the new Covid-19 cases will be monitored and the dynamics of the morbidity will be assessed, after which decisions will be made on whether to further strengthen the existing restrictions.
Information on how the new school year could start, Ministry of Education and Science should be prepared by the end of July, the politician stressed.
In her opinion, there is currently no basis for a decision on the cancellation of the Riga City Council extraordinary elections planned for August 29 or the postponement of the beginning of the school year, however, whether such scenarios will have to be considered is based on public awareness and conscientiousness.
As reported, the number of newly discovered cases of Covid-19 in Latvia has noticeably increased this week. Last day, 1841 Covid-19 tests were performed in the country and 11 new cases were registered, according to information compiled by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC).
It is known that one patient returned from abroad, five patients had contact with the patient. SPKC has started communication with five more patients.
To date, 165,610 Covid-19 examinations have been performed in the country, with 1,165 cases and 30 deaths. 1019 people have recovered.
