Tesla must meet requirements
The permit application must convince the German authorities, Steinbach explains. “All requirements must be met and the level that Tesla must meet is high.”
If that does not work, then the project is not suitable for a permit, Steinbach is clear.
When asked whether this could mean that Tesla would abandon the whole story, the minister said: ,, Never say never. I was very happy that Tesla chose Berlin. But I’m only really happy when the first shovel for the construction of the factory goes into the ground. That means that all conditions are met and the permit has been issued. “
Emmen and Eemshaven
The Northern Netherlands was emphatically in the picture for the construction of the first gigas factory of Tesla. The Eemshaven, but especially Emmen, was seriously in the retina of Tesla boss Elon Musk. He eventually chose Berlin.
Housing Tesla is a challenge anyway, Steinbach makes clear in Handelsblatt. The minister admires Tesla’s “out-of-the-box” thinking, but that often clashes with the German Gründlichkeit. Steinbach: ,, Tesla sometimes touches on our limits of flexibility. Tesla believes it can set up a factory here as quickly as in China. But that’s not how it works in Germany. “
Breeding season
Time nevertheless plays a role for the Tesla plant, Steinbach makes clear. At the place where the factory should be, there are still trees.
They must be cleared and that must have happened before the new breeding season starts mid-March. ,, Otherwise the project will be delayed three-quarters of a year. Then a new situation would arise. A situation where I am skeptical as to whether we can hold Tesla for so long. “
