Minister Diependaele wants to protect chip shops as a monument

After the chip culture, the Minister of Real Estate Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) now wants to protect several chip shops. ‘Like most Flemish people, I love a delicious pack of chips, but the typical chip shops are getting lost more and more.’

It’s French fries week. According to Diependaele, this is the perfect moment to launch a new scoop: ‘The French fries culture has been recognized for some time as an intangible heritage. Like most Flemish people, I also love a delicious pack of fries, but the typical chip shops are getting lost more and more. That is why I want to protect a few chip shops in Flanders as a monument.’

The minister believes that immovable heritage can be about more than castles and cathedrals. Just as he started an investigation to protect popular cafes, there is now an investigation to do the same for chip shops. “Obviously, it’s not the intention to protect everything. We are careful with our protections and therefore only opt for high-quality heritage pearls. I do want to put together a nice sample card for future generations’, says Diependaele.
