Miners are caught using 3800 PlayStation 4 in Ukraine

The cryptocurrency farm illegally used energy to run

The relationship between gamers and cryptocurrencies is not the healthiest, especially for the PC Gamers. but when 3.800 PlayStation 4 are used to mining illegally, the thing changes. O Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) ended up with one mining scheme that used “cat” on the power grid to be able to mine the virtual coins. The case took place in the town of Vinnytsia.

According to the Ukrainian government agency, about 5,000 pieces of hardware in general they were also found and confiscated. beyond the thousands PlayStation 4, more than 500 plates of video, 50 processors, notebooks and cell phones were seized. No details were specified about the parts used.

The crypto-mining farm operated in a shed and, according to officials, is the largest ever found in the country. During searches, documents showing the misuse of the power grid were discovered. According to the agency responsible for the action, entire neighborhoods of Vinnytsia would be without electricity if illegal mining continued. The act falls under Article 188-1 of the Ukrainian law for crimes of “theft of water, electricity or heating through unauthorized use”

That video cards are the main items when it comes to mining is no longer new to those who follow this situation, but what is really surprising are the Sony consoles used for the practice. The website Tom’s Hardware even remembers a game boy project equipped with Raspberry used for mining. As with Nintendo’s modified handheld, using PlayStation 4 for this isn’t efficient at all.

Also according to Tom’s Hardware, video memories are the most important components for mining, considering bandwidth, clock speed and amount of memory. The PS4 is equipped with 8GB GDDR5 rolling to 5.5 Gb/s in a 256-bit interface delivering a bandwidth of up to 176 GB/s. The PS4 Pro has memories operating in 6.8 Gb/s with bandwidth up to 217.6 GB/s. For comparison purposes, the AMD Radeon RX 580, one of the best GPUS for mining second tests done by Tom’s Hardware, delivers up to 256 GB/s.

The efficiency of using consoles for mining is unknown, even thousands of them. The PS4 Pro delivers memory performance close to what we see on more modest video cards, so you can imagine it’s possible. If fashion catches on, in addition to the lack of PC components, there will be a lack of consoles as well.
