KONTAN.CO.ID – Jakarta. The third or booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine program has targeted more than 1.3 million people in Indonesia. Then, what are the follow-up events after immunization (KIPI) or side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine that occur.
AEFI or Covid-19 booster vaccine side effects are normal. Knowing the AEFIs or the side effects of the Co vaccine makes you ready for the third dose of vaccination.
The government has implemented a further dose of Covid-19 vaccine or booster vaccine in Indonesia since January 12, 2022. Based on official data as of January 20, 2022, 1,353,.395 people have received a booster Covid-19 vaccine. So, what are the side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine?
So far, there are six types of Covid-19 booster vaccines that have received approval from the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), namely Sinovac, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Janssen, Moderna, Zifivax, and Sinopharm.
However, the government only uses three types of Covid-19 vaccines for boosters, namely Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca. The three Covid-19 booster vaccines have their respective side effects and each recipient sometimes experiences different AEFI symptoms.
What about the development of AEFI or the side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine in Indonesia?
Reporting from Kompas.com, the Chairman of the National KIPI Commission, Hinky Hindra, Irawan Satari, said that there had been incoming reports regarding KIPI or the side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine being implemented in Indonesia. He explained that the reported side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine were not much different from the basic vaccination.
According to him, so far the side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine are mild and subside in a short time. “Reports have been received (related to the booster vaccine AEFI). Symptoms are not different from basic vaccination, the proportion of AEFI is low, symptoms are mild and brief. Heal with or without treatment,” said Hinky when contacted by Kompas.com, Tuesday (18/1/2022).
What are the AEFIs / side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine?
Hinky added that some of the side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine reported from AEFI include:
- Pain at the injection site
- Nausea or vomiting
- Drowning, lethargic, or tired
- Muscle or joint pain
- Local swelling
Meanwhile, if a person experiences AEFI or the side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine have mild symptoms, they can take paracetamol as an alternative with a dose that adjusts for age.
However, if the side effects that occur after getting the Covid-19 booster vaccine or a follow-up vaccination do not subside immediately or even get worse, then you can immediately contact the nearest health facility.
For information, the Covid-19 booster vaccine will be given free of charge to all Indonesian people who meet the criteria, such as aged 18 years and over and have received a complete dose of vaccine for at least 6 months.
The ticket check and schedule for the Covid-19 booster vaccination can be done through the official caringlindungi.id page or the PeduliLindung application, by logging in using the account you already have.
The benefits of the Covid-19 booster vaccine
Reisa Broto Asmoro as the Government Spokesperson and Ambassador for the Adaptation of New Habits said that people need to get a booster Covid-19 vaccine after 6 months of undergoing the second dose of vaccination. A booster Covid-19 vaccine is needed to increase individual protection, especially for vulnerable groups of people.
“Based on the results of the study, there was a decrease in antibodies six months after the primary dose or two complete doses of injection, and one dose for the Janssen vaccine, so a follow-up or booster dose was needed,” said Reisa, quoted from the Covid19.go.id website.
This is also supported by the results of a study from the National Immunization Expert Advisory Committee (ITAGI) through letter number ITAGI/SR/2/2022 regarding the study of advanced doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. ITAGI recommends giving a booster to improve the effectiveness of a vaccine that has decreased.
Reisa explained that on January 12, 2022, the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) had issued six vaccine brands that were approved for boosters, namely Sinovac-Coronavac, Pfizer, Astrazeneca, Moderna, Zifivax, and Janssen. In addition, BPOM also issued a third vaccination guide.
“On January 12, 2022, the POM also issued guidelines for the equivalent of vaccines that can be used, which could be homologous vaccines or vaccines that are the same as primary vaccines, or heterologous vaccines which are different from primary vaccines,” explained Reisa.
Then the guidelines are complemented by guidelines from the Ministry of Health which are adjusted to the amount and stock of available vaccines. Reisa explained that there are two equivalent vaccines for boosters.
“Recipients of the Sinovac primary vaccine can use half a dose of Pfizer or half a dose of Astrazeneca as a booster. Meanwhile, recipients of the Astrazeneca primary vaccine can use half a dose of Moderna or half a dose of Pfizer,” he explained.
That’s the list of AEFIs or the side effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccine that you need to understand. The side effects of the Covid-19 booster are only mild, people don’t need to worry.
