Million of people have to stay inside after an explosion at the Spanish chemical plant NOW

An explosion took place in a chemical plant in the Spanish city of Tarragona on Tuesday evening. At least four people have suffered very serious burns, two people are missing. Residents of the city and nearby places are advised to stay indoors for the time being.

Windows and doors must also remain closed for the time being. The explosion could still be heard tens of kilometers away and led to considerable smoke development.

It is not clear which substances have been released, but as a precaution the so-called plaseqcat alarm has been issued. This anticipates potentially released harmful substances. Sirens would have sounded only an hour later, according to Diari de Tarragona.

The safety advice applies to more than one million residents. Nearly 800,000 people live in Tarragona, while over 200,000 residents of Reus, Salou, Vila-Seca and Constantí are advised to stay indoors, the local newspaper writes.

Train traffic in the region has been temporarily suspended by order of the Catalan police force Mossos d’Esquadra.
