There is actually nothing special about it, says Oosterbaan. Every year the animals reproduce in this way. But this year the ‘milky’ sea was captured by a resident of Texel and the images of the reproduction were shared on Facebook. “Then it suddenly became news. Great fun, of course. A lot of people don’t know this, but every oyster farmer is familiar with this phenomenon”, the nature guide laughs.
“Orgy in the NIOZ harbor”, Texel Sytske Dijksen wrote with her images on Facebook. NH News shared her photos first. “Yes, sex and oysters, it naturally appeals to the imagination,” Dijksen told NOS. “But it was really a coincidence, because I wasn’t looking for this.”
