Mild Covid-19 and OTG Patients Can Fast in Ramadan

Merdeka.com – A specialist in heart and blood vessels from the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) and Junior Doctor Network (JDN), Vito A. Damay does not prohibit COVID-19 patients with mild or no symptoms (OTG) from fasting in the month of Ramadan, as long as conditions are still possible.

“As far as I know, COVID-19 patients are still able to fast, they are not prohibited from fasting, especially if there are no symptoms (OTG) and mild symptoms,” he said in an online discussion, written on Thursday (15/4).

On that occasion, a clinical nutritionist from the University of Indonesia, Putri Sakti, advised the patient to consult a doctor first to ensure that his condition allows fasting or not. According to him, patients, especially those who are in a recovery period, tend not to be able to balance their food intake and their needs, which can worsen the condition.

So, if after consulting a doctor the condition is not possible, then he can change his fast in another month when he has recovered.

“People who are sick need recovery, their metabolism is higher, while their food consumption cannot be good, especially those (with severe COVID-19 disease), so in terms of intake and needs, not having a balance can actually worsen their condition. In Islam it is permissible if conditions do not allow. Fasting is replaced on another day when his condition has improved. Consult your doctor first, “said Putri.

During recovery, Putri advised patients to meet their dietary needs starting from increasing low-fat vegetable and animal protein, varying vegetable and fruit dishes in order to get a variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

“If you feel that your intake is not optimal, you can consider a supplement, but you should not have a single dose except for vitamin D (90 percent of Indonesians have genetic disorders, so for example 1000 units of vitamin D are added). Meanwhile, other vitamins do not need a single dose unless the doctor recommends it,” he said. he said. [ded]
