Dutch cyclist Milan Vader will remain under observation for the next few days at Bilbao University Hospital, his Jumbo-Visma team announced on Saturday evening.

Vader was seriously injured on Friday following his heavy fall in a descent of the 5th stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, between Zamudio and Mallabia.

The team had been optimistic on Friday evening “we would like to inform you that his situation is stable”, in response to certain information which evoked “a critical state”.

Jumbo-Visma also specifies that Vader will continue his recovery in the hospital of the Basque city without giving further details on the state of health of the 26-year-old runner, a mountainbike specialist, who is doing his first season on the road with a WorldTour team.

Some sources mention multiple fractures (vertebrae, scapula, collarbone) in addition to head injuries for the unfortunate teammate of Wout van Aert.
