Mikati clarifies and anger continues: gradual normalization with Israel?

The clarification of Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s media office did not contribute to the intensity of the social media controversy over his participation in a meeting that included an Israeli minister. Lebanese and Iraqis share the same shock in light of an Iraqi minister’s attendance at the session. The requests for clarification turned into an expression of indignation.

Dozens have released a photo of the meeting, which was published by the Israeli newspaper “Haaretz”. The urgent image and Israeli leaks have suggested that the Israeli media point to a gradual normalization that is taking place at non-bilateral levels. In addition to participation in sessions of the United Nations and the Security Council, there are international initiatives to rally enemies, once under technical slogans, as was the case in the border demarcation agreement, and again with regional environmental and apolitical initiatives. , as well as today the meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Mikati’s press office explained the theme of the photo in a specialized workshop at the Sharm El-Sheikh climate conference, which saw the participation of Mikati, along with delegations from Iraq and Palestine. He said: “The expanded meeting took place at the invitation and presence of the presidents of Egypt and Cyprus, and with broad international and Arab participation, as was the case for other activities of the Climate Conference, and did not involve any contact with any Israeli official. ” Mikati’s media office said “the hype that the Israeli media creates at such conferences has become known targets.”

However, Israeli targets do not deny that the meeting took place and the presence of Israelis in meetings in which Arabs participate has become a common sight. Many Lebanese activists are surprised here, who see the issue as a political failure, and it cannot be justified. The custom of the boycott requires refraining from attending meetings that include Israeli participation, and it is not natural for the Lebanese Prime Minister, engaged in hostility to Israel in his ministerial statement, to be present at a meeting where Israelis are present. The discussion on the communication sites on this participation and on the clarifications of the Mikati office has not been resolved.
