Miedema proud of record: ‘Even got text messages from Chelsea and City players’ | NOW

Vivianne Miedema is proud to be the all-time top scorer of the English Women’s Super League since Sunday. The Arsenal striker was not really busy with the record, but realizes through the reactions of teammates and opponents that she has achieved something special.

“I even received text messages from players of Chelsea and Manchester City. That made me think, it is a special achievement”, said Miedema, who won her 50th, 51st and 51st Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur (6-1). 52nd goal scored at the highest level in England.

She thus broke the record of the English attacker Nikita Parris, who scored 49 times for Everton and Manchester City from 2011 to 2019. It is striking that the 24-year-old Miedema needed far fewer matches than Parris (50 at 97), who is now active for Olympique Lyon.

“It is great to run one on one in such a strong competition”, Miedema continues. “And it is also quite bizarre that I already have the record. The Super League has been around for ten years and some girls have also been playing here for ten years. Then I came here three years ago as a Dutch boy and break the record.”

“And I am not finished yet, hopefully I can expand the record considerably. Although the most important thing for me is that I am important to the team. I am not so concerned with records.”

Miedema wants to be there in 2027

Miedema does not see himself leaving Arsenal any time soon and certainly not from England. “The hundred goals should be possible,” she says with a smile. “My contract will expire at the end of the season, but there is an option to extend. I think the English league is the best league in the world, so I’m fine here. Even if you never know in football.”

With the Orange Women, Miedema has been the all-time top scorer since last year and now the counter stands at 69 goals in 89 international matches. “The ultimate record? Ever making it to 100 at Orange would be very cool.”

With her 24 years, that does not seem unfeasible for Miedema, who made his debut in Orange in 2013. On Monday it was announced that the Netherlands, together with Belgium and Germany, has applied for the organization of the 2027 World Cup and Miedema hopes to experience this as an international.

“I will be about thirty and at that age you can still be a great athlete and football player. And if I enjoy the game, I want to continue for another ten years. But 2027 is still a long way off.”

Miedema is currently preparing with the Orange squad for the European Championship qualifying match against Estonia on Friday in Groningen. With a win, the Netherlands is qualified for the final tournament in England in 2022.
