Middelheim Museum’s ‘Crooked Boat’ gets a thorough resto … (Kiel)

Antwerp

The Middelheim Museum has just lost its crown jewel. Just for a moment, because Erwin Wurm’s work Misconceivable, popularly known as’ the crooked boat ‘, will be back on its familiar spot across the moat on Middelheimlaan in three weeks’ time after a thorough restoration.

The modern artwork was carefully removed by crane on Monday. The boat will be refurbished in the courtyard of the open-air museum in the coming weeks. “The ‘skin’ of the boat is cared for and sealed every year, just like a real boat, but after almost ten years it is time to also intensively work on the inner structure,” says head of collections Veerle Meul.

Erwin Wurm’s Misconceivable has been part of the permanent collection of the museum since 2011 and has since acquired the status of “signboard”.

During the restoration, a tent will be placed over the boat, but the museum is still trying to ensure that the work will remain visible to the public. The Middelheim Museum took advantage of the corona period to restore no fewer than thirty works of art. “That way we could keep a lot of people working, because that was also perfect here in the open air,” says Meul. joro
