Loyal user Microsoft Office must be familiar with the assistant Clippy in the form of paper clips. After shutting down in Office 2007, Microsoft revive Clippy but this time in the form emoji.
The beginning of Clippy’s return began when Microsoft campaigned on Twitter and Instagram. In a tease on Twitter, Microsoft said it would replace the paper clip emoji on Microsoft 365 with Clippy if the tease gets 20,000 likes.
The campaign was successful and now the teaser has got more than 162 thousand likes. Clippy will then replace the paper clip emoji in Windows, Office, Microsoft Teams, and other Microsoft 365 products.
The return of Clippy is part of Microsoft’s massive emoji update. Later, more than 1,800 emoji in Microsoft 365 will carry 3D designs according to the Fluent Design system.
“I grew up using Clippy, and it looks like a fun easter egg,” said Microsoft’s official emoji expert Claire Anderson, as quoted from The Verge, Friday (16/7/2021).
“We all imagine the joy of inserting that paperclip in a Microsoft product and suddenly, you feel nostalgic.”
The new emoji designed by Microsoft do look a lot different than the current emoji in Windows 10. The 3D design and brighter colors make these emojis look more cheerful and adorable.

Not only reshuffled into 3D emoji, Microsoft will also display about 900 emoji in animation in certain products, such as in Microsoft Teams.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has tried to restore Clippy to the product. In 2019, some Microsoft Teams employees released a sticker containing a Clippy GIF, but Microsoft removed the sticker a few days later.
These thousands of new emojis will start coming to all Microsoft 365 products in the next few months. Flipgrid will be the first service to access these emojis next month, followed by Microsoft Teams and Windows in the year-end holiday season. Yammer, Outlook and other Office apps will see these new emojis afterward.
