Microsoft Mandates Three-Day Office Week for Global Employees
REDMOND, WA – Microsoft announced today a new global hybrid work policy requiring moast employees to work from the office three days per week. The shift, impacting workers worldwide, aims to foster collaboration, energy, empowerment, and improved results, according to the company.
The policy builds on a previous mandate affecting employees within 50 miles of Microsoft’s Puget Sound offices. While details for those employees were previously announced, this expands the requirement globally. Employees outside the Puget Sound area can expect further interaction regarding implementation in the coming weeks and months, with planning for non-US workers beginning in 2026.
“Our goal with this change is to provide more clarity and consistency in how we come together, while maintaining the flexibility we know you value,” said Coleman, summarizing the rationale behind the policy.
Microsoft joins a growing number of tech companies adjusting their remote work policies. Google, Meta, Dell, Intel, IBM, and Zoom all currently require employees to be in the office at least three days a week, while Amazon mandates five days.
The company stated it had no further details to share regarding the specific implementation for US-wide and global employees at this time. Puget Sound-area employees have until September 19 to file for an exception to the policy. Microsoft emphasized that “the most meaningful breakthroughs happen when we build on each other’s ideas together, in real time.”
