It seems more and more likely that the long-awaited Surface Laptop 4 You may be using an outdated AMD processor. A benchmark that was leaked to a computer using a CPU called the ‘Surface Edition’ suggests that we may get stuck with a Ryzen 4000 series chip, not the newer 5000 series chips.
THE UserBenchmark the entry was found for an unknown PC using an ‘AMD Ryzen 7 Microsoft Surface Edition’, with an ‘RX Vega 8 4000’ built in, the generation of graphics used by older Ryzen 4000 CPUs. Specifically, the chip in the supposed Surface Laptop 4 looks a lot like an eight-core Ryzen 7 4800U.
It’s certainly disappointing to hear this as there are better processors out there, but the 16GB RAM included in the benchmark could give these older chips a boost. Nothing has been confirmed yet, so Microsoft may still surprise us with more powerful hardware than we expect, but with all the rumors circulating, we are hopeless.
What are the other CPU leaks on Surface Laptop 4?
A benchmark from 2020 suggested that we could get a Surface Laptop 4 with the option of an AMD Ryzen 4000 processor or an Intel Tiger Lake-U CPU. This was later confirmed by benchmarks this year, which showed a custom AMD CPU and an 11th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU being used in suspicious Surface 4s.
It seems strange that Microsoft is using newer Intel chips alongside older AMD processors, but the evidence suggests that this may be the case. However, it may not be a knockout for AMD, as rumored benchmark scores For each device, it outstripped Intel with its multi-core score of 4,970, compared to 5,726.
Until an official reveal, we won’t know for sure what hardware the Surface Laptop 4 will come with. So we’ll have to wait and see which version comes out on top in this latest battleground for AMD and Intel.
