Microsoft is cutting about 5 percent of its workforce. The layoffs follow some cutbacks that Microsoft already implemented last year. The most recent rounds of layoffs at the tech company were in July and October of 2022. Vacancies were mainly withdrawn and a recruitment freeze was introduced. The new layoffs would mainly affect HR and engineering positions.
If thousands of jobs are actually lost at Microsoft, the company will follow the example of other American tech giants who have laid off thousands of employees in recent months. Amazon, for example, will lose 18,000 jobs and Meta, Facebook’s parent company, will cut 11,000 jobs. As the new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk fired half of the staff.
