Microsoft IDE: Visual Studio simplifies working with Linux systems

Microsoft has its second Preview of the upcoming version 16.5 of Visual Studio 2019 released. This includes a large number of innovations, which should improve cross-platform development, as the manufacturer writes. This applies in particular to the development for Linux.

For example, Visual Studio 2019 offers the option of developing locally for Linux, but building the code on a remote Linux system and performing the debugging there. For this, of course, the source code must be copied to the remote system, which Microsoft has now optimized. The scope of the changes is monitored and only the files concerned are copied. The copying process is accelerated significantly, especially for trivial changes.

The development environment also enables the separation of local development and local building on the one hand and distribution on a remote server on the other hand. Visual Studio 2019 will also support this function in the future with the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), which should simplify Linux development. This can be used both with projects that use MSBuild and with the CMake tool.

Microsoft has also improved the handling of CMake itself. Files can now be added to or removed from a CMake project without having to change the CMake scripts. It happens automatically. The development environment now also offers a so-called language service for CMake. This should simplify navigation in very complex projects.

Visual Studio will also support the FIPS 140-2 standard in the future. The team has also improved Intellisense support. The final version 16.5 of Visual Studio 2019 should be released in February or March.
