Microsoft gives technical presentation about chip in Xbox Series X – Gaming – News

You have to take into account:

Most games were still made with the One S (1.3Teraflops) as the goal, where the One X used higher resolutions and better textures, but it stops there.

In practice, many games got stuck in 2013 when it comes to graphics development. If you look at the exclusive list of OneX games, it is actually quite a meager list when you take the cartoon etc games off the list. And then also the necessary PC cross-platform titles.

In other words, the amount of games that are really architecturally developed for the OneX is limited, given that the OneX was simply an upgrade path for higher resolutions.

The Xbox Series X is being pushed by Microsoft as the next generation. As a result, many games are making the leap from developing for a 1.3Teraflop console to a 12 teraflop console (with a vastly improved CPU … actually the CPU was the limitation on the OneS / OneX).

In that period from 2013 – <2017 you also see that the die size has jumped from 240 mm2 to 360 mm2.

For the Series X, the die size has been left the same (360 mm2) but doubled the performance of the GPU.

And add to the CPU:

> 8x Zen2 cores is roughly 4x faster than 8x Jaguar.

… Yep … 4x improvement. And we all know that the CPU had become a limitation on the S / X.

You should not be afraid that there was “only” a doubling between the 2017 and 2020 because in practice the real jump is 10x because people go from designing for a 2013 console to the 2020 console. Let alone the 4X in the CPU area.

Add to that, there are also a lot of improvements between the console generations in terms of compression and other tricks.

I am a pure PC gamer (if I have the time) but I am happy that there is finally a new generation of consoles because this means that, after 7 years, they will finally make games for the 2018/2019 generation of PC hardware. Instead of games designed for 2011/2012 PC generation hardware + with higher resolutions / textures. Because cross platform development is limited by the “lowest denominator” and that was the OneS for many years.
