Michigan to face Western Michigan in Historic Frankfurt Game

in a landmark event for college football, the University of Michigan will play Western Michigan University in Frankfurt, Germany, marking the first-ever NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) game held in the city. This matchup, scheduled for the 2026 season, will be the fifth college football game to take place in Germany, but the first to feature two FBS programs.

The NFL has established a presence in Germany, with annual games since 2022. Deutsche bank Park in Frankfurt hosted two NFL games in 2023, and this season, Olympiastadion in Berlin will be the venue for the Indianapolis Colts versus Atlanta Falcons on november 9th.

Michigan, a program that achieved a perfect 15-0 record and a national championship just two seasons ago, has undergone meaningful changes. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh departed for the Los Angeles Chargers,leading to Sherrone Moore’s promotion. The Wolverines also saw a considerable exodus of key players, including quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

despite a challenging period last season, Michigan demonstrated resilience, culminating in a surprising victory over rival and eventual national champion Ohio State, followed by a win against Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl, finishing with an 8-5 record. Future prospects appear bright with the anticipated arrival of quarterback Bryce Underwood, ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class by 247Sports.

Historically, michigan holds an undefeated 8-0 record against Western Michigan. Their most recent encounter in 2021 resulted in a 47-14 victory for Michigan. The 2026 game in Frankfurt will be the first time these two teams compete outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
