los Angeles, CA – November 21, 2023 – Michael MannS highly anticipated sequel, Heat 2, is set to film 47 days in the Los Angeles region after receiving tax credits through the California Film Incentive program, according to an announcement today. The project is among 52 films selected to receive credits, marking the highest number of titles chosen in a single round of incentives.
The news arrives as Los Angeles film production reached an all-time low during the July-September period, according to FilmLA. The California Film Incentive program is designed to bring productions back to the state, with director Jake Kasdan (Jumanji) stating,”I have long looked forward to the day when the California Film Incentive would help us bring movies like this one back home – and now that it does,I am so grateful that ours will be among the first to take advantage of the new program.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment chief executive Tom Rothman added, “The resultant work will bring jobs and revenue into the state at a much needed time and will help the filmmakers make the vrey best film possible.”
Beyond Heat 2, 42 self-reliant titles with budgets under $10 million will also benefit from the subsidies, including Epiphany (starring Bill Murray and Kristen Wiig), The Incredible Heist of Hallelujah Jones, Sun Baked, A Tree is Blue, and Nightwatching.
Ellen goldsmith-Vein,a producer on Epiphany and Chair of Mayor Karen Bass’ Entertainment industry Council, emphasized the importance of state support for filmmakers, saying,”California has been home to my career from the start, and being able to make Epiphany here means I get to work with the best crews in the business while keeping jobs in my community.”
A record 51 films were initially approved for credits in March. The current round of incentives is projected to generate 511 days of filming outside of the Los Angeles region, taking advantage of additional incentives offered in those areas.
California Film Commission Executive Director Colleen Bell stated, ”This round of awards demonstrates the outstanding scope of our program. We are welcoming projects from major franchises to independent films led by visionary artists…California’s film industry is not just rebounding,it’s redefining what’s possible.”
