His third studio recording was almost unanimously named the best album of the year by the Mercury Awards Commission and critics. This album tells about the black artist’s place in society, self-esteem, social problems, and has become even more relevant in the context of the “Black Lives Matters” movement.

Released last November, the album surpassed musical greats such as Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia and Stormzie’s Heavy Is The Head, winning £ 25,000. Michael Kivanuka’s previous two albums, Home Again and Love & Hate, were also nominated for a Mercury Prize.

Michael Kivanuka, whose parents fled the Idi Amina regime in Uganda to London, is a former session musician who dropped out of the Royal Academy of Music in London to become a solo artist. The young musician came to the fore in 2011, when she took part in the singer’s Adele concert tour.

The award has been given since 1992 as the best album of the year recorded by British musicians. The winner is chosen by music professionals and is presented at an annual ceremony in London. This year, due to a coronavirus pandemic, the winner was announced on the British public broadcaster BBC air.

In the summer of next year, Michael Kivanuka will visit Latvia – on June 15, 2021, he will give a concert at the Sigulda Castle Ruins Stage. The concert was scheduled for this year, but was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.
