(CNN) – Michael Bloomberg ended his presidential campaign on Wednesday, closing a bold career in which the former mayor of New York spent hundreds of millions of dollars of his own money to fund his late campaign.
“Three months ago, I entered the race for president to defeat Donald Trump. Today, I’m leaving the race for the same reason: to defeat Donald Trump, because for me it is clear that staying will make it harder to achieve that goal, ”Bloomberg announced in an email to his followers.

Bloomberg leaves the race after a disappointing performance in the super Tuesday that left him with a single victory: American Samoa.
It occurs shortly after Biden received support from the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg, and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, who ended their campaigns and quickly backed Biden, in an attempt to begin merging with the moderates.
The merger was a significant blow to Bloomberg because it undermined a central argument of his campaign: that there is no strong and moderate candidate with whom the party can join to face Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
Michael Bloomberg is backing the presidential campaign of former Vice President Joe Biden, announced in the same email announcing his departure from the race.

“I have always believed that defeating Donald Trump begins with joining behind the candidate with the best opportunity to do so. After yesterday’s vote, it is clear that the candidate is my friend and a great American, Joe Biden, ”he writes.
“I’ve known Joe for a long time. I know your decency, your honesty and your commitment to the issues that are so important to our country, including firearms safety, medical care, climate change and good jobs. I have had the opportunity to work with Joe on these issues over the years, and Joe has fought for working people all his life. Today I am happy to support him, and I will work to make him the next president of U.S “
