You will definitely be talking about this football afternoon in Miami for a very long time. The game against the New England Patriots already seemed to be lost when something incredible happened at Hard Rock Stadium.

Insane! Incredible! Crazy! What happened in Miami on Sunday will be remembered in the NFL for years to come. The Dolphins’ defeat against the New England Patriots seemed almost sealed, their season almost over. Seconds before the end it was 28:33, Miami had no more timeout, had the ball far in its own half. Game over! Or isn’t it?

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw the ball to Kenny Stills. Two lateral passes followed before Kenyan Drake started a zigzag run over 52 yards and actually made it to the end zone. The tumbling star tight end Rob Gronkowski tried in vain to stop the madness. Touchdown, 34:33! Dolphins players and fans went crazy at Hard Rock Stadium. To the reporter’s question “What on earth has just happened?” Tannehill had no answer on the sidelines: “I can’t believe it,” stammered the quarterback, who put the chance of the final play at “one percent”. With a score of 7: 6, Miami can continue to hope for the play-offs.

Gronkowski was stunned after the game: “I have never experienced anything like this. It will be a great character test for us. I have to do this tackle.” The game went pretty well for the Patriots. Star quarterback Tom Brady (27/43, 358 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT) set another career milestone when he took the sole lead in the category “Most touchdown passes including play-offs” (now 582). The victory of the Dolphins, which was no longer considered possible, ultimately prevented the Patriots (9: 4) from securing the AFC East in Miami for the tenth time in a row.

Chiefs win crime story against Ravens

There was also a real thriller in Kansas City, where the chiefs were lagging 17:24 against the Baltimore Ravens shortly before the end. But the last word was far from spoken. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes scored two 4th-down conversions against the league’s best defense, before he equalized with a touchdown pass to Damien Williams 53 seconds before the end. After a fumble from the Ravens, the chiefs even had the chance to turn around a little later, but kicker Harrisson Butker missed his field goal attempt from 43 yards to the right! So it went into overtime. Butker made it better there: his 36-yard field goal ultimately gave the chiefs (10-2) the 27:24 success and thus the play-off ticket. The Ravens (7: 6) are now level with Miami in the race for the play-off wildcard.

Texans series ends – Saints make NFC South clear

What else was going on in the early games of the NFL? The Indianapolis Colts celebrated a 24:21 away win at the Houston Texans, who lost after nine successes in a row. QB Andrew Luck threw for 399 yards (27/41, 2 TD, 1 INT). The Colts (7: 6) are three games to go in the AFC South but still two wins behind the Texans (9: 4).

The New Orleans Saints secured their second consecutive division title in NFC South with a 28:14 win at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (after eleven-point halftime deficit) – something they have not yet achieved in franchise history.

A bitter 16:40 home defeat against the New York Giants (5: 8) almost certainly ended the already low play-off hopes of the Washington Redskins (6: 7). Giants running back Saquon Barkley had 170 rushing yards, with a 78-yard touchdown run the rookie broke the 1000-yard mark for the season. Things are now looking very bad for the Carolina Panthers (6: 7), who already suffered their fifth defeat in a row at the Cleveland Browns (20:26).

Remaining hope remains

The Green Bay Packers got in touch with interim coach Joe Philbin,
who takes over for the tough-fired McCarthy
, back on the winning road. Against the Atlanta Falcons a 0: 7 deficit was followed by 34 points in a row, in the end there was a 34:20 success and the balance sheet improved to 5: 7: 1. This means that the Käsestädter, where Aaron Rodgers set a new NFL record and replaced Brady (now over 358 pass attempts without interception), still have chances of a play-off place in the NFC.
