DARMSTADT – (red). Mia Bencun, born in Lagos / Nigeria in 1990 and of Bosnian origin, received the Charlotte Prince Scholarship. She will move to Darmstadt in February 2021, where she will then be able to use the Prinz atelier in Arheilgen for two years. In addition, she receives a monthly allowance of 1,100 euros for her living expenses, the city of Darmstadt announced.

Mia Bencun studied sculpture and media theory at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach. Her focus is on sculptural installations and digital art with a sculptural focus. At the end of the scholarship – probably early 2023 – a catalog with their work is to be published. An exhibition is also planned.

According to the will of the founder, Charlotte Prinz, the scholarship serves to promote the next generation of artists and is intended to help young artists to develop artistically after completing their studies.

A jury made up of Mayor Jochen Partsch, cultural advisor Ludger Hünnekens and representatives of the Kunstverein, the Mathildenhöhe Institute and the State Museum as well as an active artist decided on the award of the scholarship.

The jury was impressed by Mia Bencun’s artistic positions, in which influences from different countries are explored and combined in multi-layered sculptures and installations.

The final exhibition of the current Charlotte Prinz scholarship holder, Genaro Strobel, planned for September 2020 in the Kunsthalle Darmstadt had to be postponed to January 30 to April 18, 2021 due to the corona restrictions. Genaro Strobel’s scholarship was accordingly extended until January 2021.
