Mexico “for humanitarian reasons and temporarily, will not return to their countries of origin certain people who will wait in Mexico for their immigration process before the US courts,” reaffirmed Roberto Velasco, head of the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) for North America. .

“The main reason for this decision is to substantially improve the conditions of migrants, allow their asylum process in the United States and ensure their rights,” he declared in a video message.

Reestablish the Stay in Mexico program

US President Joe Biden agreed with his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reestablish the “Stay in Mexico” program, established by Donald Trump to force asylum seekers from the United States to wait for their process in Mexican territory.

For now, more than 26,500 petitioners are on waiting lists in eight Mexican border cities, a study by the University of Texas at Austin revealed this week.

“We do not expect a greater flow of migrants at the border, but rather that some may submit asylum applications, different from what happens with those who are expelled from the United States through the so-called Title 42 (which allows migrants to be deported due to the pandemic)” Velasco said.

Mexico He agreed to cooperate after Washington stated that “it will address the humanitarian concerns raised by the Government,” the SRE official explained.

Among the conditions are greater funding from international organizations with shelters, prevention measures against covid-19 such as medical check-ups and vaccination, access to legal assistance and expedited processes.

“The United States will coordinate with the Mexican authorities for proper implementation, taking into consideration the capabilities of the National Migration Institute (INM) and the local security context,” Velasco said.

The program will be reactivated while the region lives a record migratory flow to the United States, whose Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) “found” more than 1.7 million undocumented immigrants on the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021, which ended on September 30.

Mexico has detected more than 190 thousand undocumented from January to September, about three times the number in 2020, in addition to having deported almost 74,300, according to the Migration Policy Unit of the Ministry of the Interior.

Despite the criticism that the Government has received for the treatment of migrants, the SRE official asserted that Mexico “maintains the same humanitarian and solidarity policy.”

“The main objective of the Government of Mexico is that under highly complex conditions, human rights are guaranteed, an orderly, safe and regular migration is encouraged, and, most importantly, the root causes of migration are addressed through cooperation programs, ”he said.
