(CNN) — Mexico will begin to vaccinate against covid-19 all young people between 15 and 17 years old and the registration will begin as of this Friday, announced on Tuesday the Secretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell.
This comes after a judge last month ordered the country’s health authorities to modify the national vaccination plan against the coronavirus to include all minors between the ages of 12 and 17.
The judge said that young people should be vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, the only vaccine against covid-19 approved for children in Mexico.
The ruling came after the parents of a 15-year-old girl filed a lawsuit against the government to vaccinate their daughter.
Following the court’s decision, the Mexican government had begun vaccinating minors, but only those with pre-existing health conditions.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the weekly average of new cases of covid-19 in Mexico is at an all-time low since March last year. The country’s health secretary said that new cases in the past 16 weeks show a reduction in infection rates.
So far, Mexico has administered almost 130 million doses against covid-19 to 75.5 million people, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
