HARDERWIJK, Netherlands – A Mexican bird spider was discovered in a residential garden in Harderwijk on September 4, 2025, prompting a response from the Animal Ambulance North-West Veluwe. The unexpected appearance of the large arachnid has raised curiosity and mild concern among local residents.
While not native to the Netherlands, the spider’s presence is believed to be the result of accidental importation, likely as a stowaway in a shipment of produce. Though generally not aggressive towards humans, Mexican bird spiders possess venom and can deliver a painful bite. Experts emphasize that such occurrences, while rare, are becoming increasingly common due to globalization and the expansion of international trade. The Animal Ambulance safely collected the spider and is coordinating with a specialized reptile and exotic animal center for its care.
The spider, identified as a Brachypelma vagans, is a terrestrial tarantula known for its docile nature and striking appearance. These spiders are popular in the pet trade, further supporting the theory of accidental release or escape. The Animal ambulance confirmed the spider is currently in a secure surroundings and poses no immediate threat to the public. Residents are advised not to approach or attempt to handle any unfamiliar spiders and to contact local authorities or animal control if a sighting occurs.
