Metz. The Covid-19 vaccination center passes the milestone of 200,000 injections

“If someone had told me last year that we would reach 200,000 vaccinations, I would not have believed it. Stéphane Jacopin, manager of the Saint-Symphorien vaccination centre, still remembers the early days, when tents and the entire IT system had to be set up.

At his side, Khalifé Khalifé, deputy mayor of Metz, in charge of health, raises his eyebrows, just to show that since then, how many steps have been successfully taken! “We opened on February 27, 2021, as soon as we had doses. We then received them intermittently. »

Less than a year later, this Wednesday, January 19, the chosen one gave a present to Lenna. “It’s the 200,000e anyone to get vaccinated,” he smiled, handing her a book on the history of Metz. The young student, at the Regional Institute of Social Work, smiled a little embarrassed. It is not easy to get vaccinated under the spotlights of the cameras and the flashes of the photographers present for the occasion.

Reservists still in place

For nearly a year, therefore, in configurations that have been modified over time, a team of doctors and nurses has not let go. The city of Metz can count on a reservoir of 75 doctors and 225 nurses. Michel Aussedat, former head of the emergency department of the CHR of Metz-Thionville, has been in the vaccination department since day one.

“As it started, we could see that it was going to last, observing the situation in Israel, in the United States. Today, the schedules do not suffer. “We are always ready”, continues Michel Aussedat. They know that vaccination will go into overtime.

“We have a drop in speed this week”, specifies Stéphane Jacopin. Probably linked to the spread of the omicron virus. “Which means that vaccinations will be postponed in a few months. Michel Aussedat smiles. “This health reserve set up by Khalifé Khalife is ready for any new pandemic, for any problem around Metz. »

In a few numbers

In February 2021, during the first vaccinations, the medical teams provided “4,000 doses per weekend,” recalls Khalifé Khalifé. In the spring, we opened from Monday to Saturday like the hairdressers. »

Today, the vaccination center covers nearly 3,000 doses per day, “we even have days when we injected 3,600 doses”.

Last week, a center dedicated to children was opened in an annex room of the sports complex, completely independent of that of adults. “330 children have been vaccinated,” emphasizes Stéphane Jacopin. “We are going to open new slots during the February holidays, further details the assistant in charge of health. We have also reduced vaccination times, which have gone from three quarters of an hour to half an hour, which makes it possible to accommodate almost 30% more young patients. »
