How do plane tracks form in the sky?

Airplane in the sky

Today’s civilization makes extensive use of air travel, and the sky is increasingly “scratched” by aircraft tracks. There is a lot of nonsense about them, so we are in Meteor with dr. Jan Havlík from the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences devoted themselves to how traces are created.

It goes completely without chemistry. Physics is enough to explain. The main reason is that a very hot engine flies through very cold, basically frozen air. Water vapor in the air begins to condense.

Interestingly, in some cases, planes can form a cloud or, conversely, “rubber” as they fly through the cloud.

The first artificial radioactivity

Marie Curie-Skłodowska and Pierre Curie in their laboratory in Paris

Aluminum is a common material that has many uses for humans. Nevertheless, it brought a huge surprise 88 years ago. French physicists Irène and Fréderic Joliot-Curie irradiated the aluminum plate with alpha particles and studied the positrons created by the collision.

However, they did not switch off their device completely before lunch, and when they returned, they discovered that other particles were coming out of the aluminum. The discovery of artificial radioactivity was born! The second year they earned the Nobel Prize. We remembered this in the section What Happened This Day, which is being prepared by Ing. František Houdek.

Why is the universe empty?

Astronaut

We feel that when we are surrounded by hard things like furniture, houses, rocks, that matter is something solid and durable. But everything consists of atoms. If the nucleus of an atom were the size of an orange, electrons would orbit it several kilometers away.

So matter is extremely empty! Our listener Vít Ryšánek wrote several poems that deal with matter and the universe. Prof. added his commentary to the poems in Meteora. Petr Kulhánek from CTU.

Video of Eumillipes persephone – The first true millipede – 1306 legs long

If you attacked the first centipede, we must disappoint you. This animal usually has far fewer legs. But there are also millipedes that have a round body cross-section compared to centipedes and they can have hundreds of legs.

Researchers have now examined the millipedes living underground and found a millipede that has more than a thousand legs. The exact number and circumstances of an interesting discovery were presented by the biologist prof. Jaroslav Petr.

How can bees defend themselves from hornets?

Tens of thousands of bees live in the beehive. They have divided functions and guard their residence well. But hornet, the enemy is much stronger and more aggressive. It can kill hundreds of bees. In a one-on-one fight, the bee has no chance.

The bees therefore came up with an amazing collective defense tactic, thanks to which the intruders literally boil with warm air. A new book by the Grada publishing house, entitled Honey bees and their mysterious life in the forest, writes about this. Jan Teplý reads for Meteor.
