Metacritic Takes Action To Prevent Site-Wide User Reviews Before Official Releases In Response To The Last of Us Part II

Following a number of mediocre user reviews, particularly when the last part of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II, the revision score aggregator Metacritic introduced a side change to its user score system.

This change now prevents user reviews from being submitted or accepted before the media release date.

As a result of this new attempt to discourage false reviews, users who visit the Metacritic page for a given item in the upcoming media will now find that the “User Score” box has been replaced by a time counting button. upon publication, prevent the user from publishing a notice without first having experienced the product.

This new system has been personally tested by the staff of Bounding into Comics, who found that this change was present on many Metacritic pages for various examples of upcoming media, including Marvel’s film Black Widow and the first season of Love Fraud. from Showtime.

When you access the User Reviews page for a video game, TV show, or movie (the Metacritic system for albums currently does not provide pages for future releases), users will receive a message that “It is not possible to submit a review before the official release of this game / premiere of the season (no specific message is provided for movie entries). ”

Not only do they appear to prevent reviews before release, but PlayStation Lifestyle reports that they prevent user reviews even after the game is released, encouraging people to play.

PlayStation LifeStyle shared a screenshot of Metacritic’s Superluminal page which contains a message encouraging users to “spend some time playing the game”.

He adds: “Come back to examine it starting at 12 noon PST on July 9. “

Superluminal released on July 7, 2020.

At the time of writing, this new system appears to have been stealthily implemented, as Metacritic has yet to officially announce these changes.
