Meta (Facebook, Instagram…) fined by the EU for failing to sufficiently protect user data

A €256 million fine was imposed by the European Union after the data of more than 530 million users was hacked in 2019.

The parent company of the world’s largest social network has just been blocked by the Data Protection Commission (DPC) on behalf of the European Union. The decision announced yesterday follows an investigation that directly targeted Facebook in April 2021 in relation to a major data breach that occurred three years earlier.

The Irish regulator then conducted the investigation targeting the questions « Facebook Search, Facebook Messenger Contact Importer and Instagram Contact Importer (…) between 25 May 2018 and September 2019 » to know if Meta had offered sufficient protection to its users in the eyes of the rules established in Europe.

The hackers had chosen to attack through “scraping”, a method of looting Facebook profiles by imitating a network feature. Thus, the contact lists of millions of users could be recovered. According to the DPC, the fine of 265 million euros is motivated by the observation “violations of European regulations“. Meta, for its part, says it has worked with the regulator and made changes to its systems to get back into compliance.
