He believes the Argentina national team has been overrated
Another of Argentina’s former stars, he tends to underestimate Lionel Messi compared to other legends such as Diego Maradona and Pelé.
All eyes are on Messi these days, after Argentina lost 2/1 to Saudi Arabia, in the first round of the group stage of the World Cup.
Claudio Caniggia, former star of the Tango national team, and famous goalscorer against Italy in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, spoke to “Corriere dello Sport” about his compatriot.
Caniggia said in his statements: “Leo is impressive, but I’ve always said that Maradona and Pele are above everything.”
On his country’s national team: “Perhaps Argentina has been overrated. I’m curious to see our team’s reaction against Mexico. The teams don’t fear them so much now after the defeat against Saudi Arabia.”
Interestingly, Messi and his teammates play Mexico in the second round today, and are in bottom place in their group at the World Cup, while Saudi Arabia leads with 3 points, then Poland and Mexico are second and third places with a point.
