Messenger and Instagram Will Get End-to-end Encryption in 2023

Jakarta

Meta — parent company Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — will roll out end-to-end encryption by default for Facebook Messenger and Instagram in 2023.

In a blog post in May, Meta initially said Messenger and Instagram would get end-to-end encryption protection by default in 2022.

But the latest update from Head of Safety Meta Antigone Davis said his party wanted to prepare this feature properly, so its launch had to be postponed until 2023, as quoted from The Verge, Monday (22/11/2021).

Meta starts merging chat between Messenger and Instagram last year to create an integrated messaging system. They also want to protect chats sent across these two platforms using end-to-end encryption by default, just like what WhatsApp offers.

Messenger users are actually now able to send messages that are protected with encryption. But they have to send the message via Secret Conversations mode and it’s off by default.

Davis said the delay was due to concerns about user safety. Because end-to-end encryption means messages can only be read by the recipient and sender, Davis says Meta doesn’t want this feature to interfere with its job of preventing criminal activity from occurring on its platform.

Once end-to-end encryption is on by default on Messenger and Instagram, Davis said Meta will use a combination of unencrypted data, account information and user reports to keep users safe and secure.

But Meta plans roll out end-to-end encryption on Messenger and Instagram could be hampered, at least in the UK. Because in 2023, the UK will implement the Online Safety Bill which requires online platforms to keep children safe and tackle harmful content quickly.

End-to-end encryption on social media has also previously faced opposition from the British Home Secretary, Priti Patel. He claims end-to-end encryption can complicate steps to prevent child abuse in the online realm.
