Merkel’s party has decided on the candidate for the chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany

Armin Laschet is significantly inferior to Marcus Zjoder in opinion polls

At a meeting of the CDU Presidium in Berlin, the candidacy of Armin Lashet was supported by a majority of votes, but not unanimously.

The Presidium of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Party of Chancellor Angela Merkel supported the nomination of the current the leader of the political force Armin Lashet the single candidate for this post from the conservative CDU / CSU bloc. This was stated by the Prime Minister of the federal state of Hesse Volker Boufier, reports Speigel on Monday, 12 April.

According to Boufier, at a meeting of the CDU Presidium in Berlin, Laschet’s candidacy was supported by a majority of votes, but not unanimously. He noted that the presidium made it clear “that we consider it extremely suitable and asked him now to discuss with Markus Zjoder how to proceed.”

“The problem is so big that we can only solve it together,” Boufier said.

The fact is that Laschet’s rival in the struggle for the right to be a candidate for German chancellor was the leader of the Christian Democratic Union and Prime Minister of Bavaria Markus Zjoder. His candidacy was supported by the Berlin branch of the CDU.

As you know, Zioder is one of the most popular politicians in the country, and many wanted to see him as a candidate, not Laschet. Zjoder is significantly ahead of Lashet in opinion polls. Federal elections in Germany will take place on September 26, 2021.

We will remind, in March, the Christian Democratic Union of Chancellor Angela Merkel suffered electoral defeat in two regions of Germany – Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
