Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in her first public speech in six months, condemned the war unleashed by Russia in Ukraine. About it writes German edition of Zeit Online.

“I stand in solidarity with Ukraine, attacked by Russia, and support its right to self-defense,” Merkel said.

The chancellor admitted that she does not want to make any assessments from outside in her free time. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as Merkel said, is too egregious a violation of international law in the history of Europe since the end of World War II.

The chancellor supports any measures taken by Germany, other EU countries, the US, NATO, the G7 and the UN to stop Russia’s “barbaric war of aggression.”

According to Merkel, no one can seriously assess how far-reaching the consequences of the war will be.

“However, they will be significant – especially for Ukrainians. Bucha has become an example of this horror,” the ex-chancellor commented.

“A ray of hope in endless sadness,” according to Merkel, will be the support of Ukrainians by many neighboring countries, in particular, Poland and Moldova.

The unity of the EU is of great importance in defeating the aggressor. Merkel urged residents of Germany to contribute to this process.

“We should never take peace and freedom for granted,” she concluded.
