The Federal Government’s East Commissioner Christian Hirte (43, CDU) resigns after the election debacle in Thuringia. He was kind of fired by Chancellor Angela Merkel (65, CDU)!
The Chancellor had told him in an interview that he could no longer be a representative for the New Länder. “Following your suggestion, I asked for my release,” he said on Twitter.
The reason for the resignation is a controversial congratulatory tweet from shepherd to FDP man Thomas Kemmerich, shortly after he was surprisingly elected Prime Minister of Thuringia on Wednesday – also with AfD votes.

On Twitter, he wrote to Kemmerich: “Your choice as a candidate for the center shows once again that the Thuringians have voted red-red-green. Good luck for this difficult task for the good of the Free State. “

SPD demanded the resignation
After the tweet, the SPD and the opposition immediately pushed for Herder’s resignation. He described the electoral community of CDU, FDP and AfD in Thuringia as “center” and could therefore no longer speak on behalf of the SPD and thus the Federal Government, said SPD leader Saskia Esken (58).
Even before the coalition summit with heads of Union and SPD taking place today in the Chancellery, Esken told the SWR: “We will have to discuss that, Mr. Hirte can no longer speak on our behalf. Incidentally, he doesn’t speak in the name of the East, in my opinion. “
Co-boss Norbert Walter Borjans said: “We no longer consider Mr. Shepherd to be justifiable in this office, and I believe that I have evaluated the signals in such a way that we do not encounter the greatest resistance.” The German Trade Union Federation (DGB) had an invitation to the East Commissioner for an event planned for October was immediately withdrawn.
Thuringia’s SPD leader Wolfgang Tiefensee welcomed the resignation and called for further consequences in the CDU. “I respect Mr. Hirtes decision, it was inevitable and long overdue.”
Christian Hirte is a native of Thuringia and is Vice-Chief of the CDU there. Since March 2018, he has been the Federal Government Commissioner for the new federal states. Its task is to represent the specific interests of the population of eastern Germany in the decisions of the federal government.
Hirte is also State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics. It was initially unclear on Saturday whether he would keep this position. It was also unclear when he would leave his post as an Eastern Commissioner.
