Merkel demands that Putin withdraw troops from the Ukrainian border / Article / LSM.lv

In a telephone conversation, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to withdraw troops from the Ukrainian border.

The relocation of Russian army units to the region was reported by the media in early April, and the official Kremlin did not deny the information.

Representatives of the German government informed that there was a discussion on strengthening the Russian military presence in the vicinity of Eastern Ukraine, and Merkel emphasized that the withdrawal of army units would reduce tensions.

Kremlin officials, meanwhile, reported that Putin had drawn Merkel’s attention to Kiev’s provocative actions, which were exacerbating the situation on the hotline.

However, specific decisions or agreements shall not be notified by the representatives of both parties.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has gone to the conflict zone to see the situation in person and encourage the soldiers. The Ukrainian leader thanked the military for protecting the homeland and awarded several soldiers.

CONTEXT:

In recent weeks, concerns about the situation in Eastern Ukraine have been significantly increased. At the end of March, Ukraine reported that Russia was concentrating its troops on the Ukrainian border and that Moscow-backed separatist militants were constantly violating last year’s ceasefire agreement.

Nearly 30 Ukrainian soldiers have been shot dead in eastern Ukraine since mid-February. The media reported that the units are also stationed in the Crimea. Commenting on the news of the concentration of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border, the Kremlin spokesman said that the Russian army was moving to the territory where it was deemed necessary.

In the spring of 2014, a conflict began in the eastern part of Ukraine. Soon after the Crimean Autonomous Region of Ukraine annexed by Russia. In February 2015 in Minsk with the participation of the leaders of Germany and France, as well as the President of Russia agreement has been reached on 13 points in the peace plan, which provided not only for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the line of conflict between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists, but also for constitutional reform in Ukraine and the special status of the separatist Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Since then, however, both sides in the conflict have reported breaches of the ceasefire from time to time and the situation has not changed significantly.
