De Vries will also drive one and probably two training sessions for Mercedes this season. He already acts there as a reserve driver and also represents the racing stable in the electric racing class Formula E, in which De Vries became champion last year. The Dutchman therefore knows the team well and Mercedes would like to help him gain more experience in Formula 1. Mercedes has not yet decided which race weekends he will participate in.
The other Mercedes reserve driver is Stoffel Vandoorne, but the Belgian is not eligible. Each team must have at least two so-called rookie have a free practice run. Vandoorne no longer falls under this category, because he has already driven in Formula 1 on behalf of McLaren for two years.
