Max Verstappen has been considerably closer to Mercedes in qualifying since the ban on party mode. This while the Red Bull is often described as the better racing car and less strong in qualifying. Verstappen was asked in Portimao whether this is still the case.
The Dutchman responded wittily: “I think we will only find out if we change car and drivers once and then compare it.”
Hamilton was equally surprised: “What are we going to change?” To which Verstappen challenged him: “We are going to switch cars. You get mine, I get yours and then we can compare the difference between the cars and see which car is really faster in qualifying or the race.”
“But, maybe we can insert a test day or something”, the Dutchman joked. The Mercedes team says on Instagram that they are happy to accept the challenge: “Max, give us a call if you want to test a Mercedes.”
