VALENCIA – If you ever come to a Spanish supermarket like Dutch or Belgian, you often see different products than in your country. It’s always an adventure, but sometimes the products are very strange, even for the average resident of Spain. This time Mercadona has put up for sale a product that is being talked about a lot on social media.
Mercadona has recently started selling one packaging containing two fried eggs or «huevos fritos». These are sold for 1.80 euros, which is much more expensive than a package of 6 L eggs that are sold in the same supermarket chain for 1.30 euros, so that’s six fried eggs (if you make them yourself). The packaging states that the eggs can be heated in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Fried eggs are sold as the house brand “huevos plancha” Farmer . So it’s not so much about “huevos fritos”, which are traditionally prepared in Spain in a generous layer of olive or sunflower oil, but about two grilled eggs (plancha). The ingredients consist of two eggs, olive oil and sunflower oil according to Basque producer Lagumar Seas. If the package is closed, it can be kept for two weeks, but if the package is opened, the eggs should be eaten within 10 hours.
People on social media are laughing at this new product from Mercadona, but others are talking about something clever about Mercadona. The fact is that if Spain’s largest and most well-known supermarket chain sells two fried eggs for 1.80 euros, it is undoubtedly preceded by market research and that there is a demand for this product. Apparently there are many people who can’t or won’t make fried eggs.
